Employers know they can't discriminate based on race, gender or age. But what about size?

A Trip To The Bariatric

by mike fosmer on 2008-01-12 12:01:35 - Email This

Bariatric is not a Balkans resort destination. Bariatrics is a branch of medicine that deals with obesity.

Extremely heavy individuals might need a chair that supports more than 500 pounds. Domore has been making heavy-weight seating for 30 years.

Their XXL task chair rates up to 700 pounds.

The extra beef isn't cheap. The XXL sells for around $2,800. But when you need it . . . you need it.

Kansas City's Cramer makes heavy duty chairs for tough environments. Better known as the manufacturer of the ubiquitous Kick-Step stool, Cramer claims to to have introduced the first ergonomic office chair in 1935.

With their Triton and Triton Max models, Cramer has earned a significant share of the tough-duty market, providing seating for factories, labs, police and fire and dispatch centers that are used 24/7.

Cramer's new Ever series offers field-replaceable seat and back cushions that attach to a rugged frame that is designed to last for . . .gulp . . . ever.

Three sizes of cushions fit on the universal cast aluminum frame, and all support users up to 400 lbs.

Is the Ever immortal? That remains to be seen. The Ever just started shipping this month. Cramer warranty's the Ever for 15 years of three-shift use.

The Ever's price ranges from $500 to $900.

If Your Chair Breaks, You Hit the Floor

I ran across this You Tube video that demonstrates what can happen if you give a heavy employee an undersized work chair.

This is actually a mean office prank but it shows exactly what can happen if you don't pay attention to the weight limits on your office seating.

Big And Tall Risk Management

by mike fosmer on 2007-11-29 20:53:11 - Email This

You know your plus-size employees would be more comfortable and productive in a chair that fits. But you are risking more than comfort by overloading standard office chairs?

Most office chairs are designed to support loads of less than 250 pounds.

If you have worker who weighs more than 250 you could be risking a chair catastrophe that can get really expensive. Lost work hours, insurance hits and lawsuits are common when a chair collapses.

Getting an appropriately sized chair for your big workers is the best prevention. Money well spent to minimize your risk.

What a tall guy needs.

by mike fosmer on 2007-11-21 14:31:18 - Email This

Many "regular" chairs (250 lb weight limit) can work for users 6'3" and taller. Task chair manufacturers like HON, Sitonit and 9to5 seating all offer options tailored for the tall.

Tall users generally like a higher back and a deeper seat. A seat depth adjustment, that is an add-on to the various ergonomic control mechanisms, allows the seat to move forward away form the back 2 to 3 inches. This gives the extra depth tall people want without going to the "big guy" chair option.
